LOAD512 - Day 14 - Anatomy of a two year old

The prompt for Lain Ehmann's Layout a Day (LOAD512) challenge for Day 14: Manic Monday 3-2-1 (3 embellishments, 2 pieces of paper, and 1 photo)  Do this as quickly as you can.

I put this together in about 30 minutes, but the title and photo and journaling have been swimming around in my head for a few days, now.

Journaling Reads:

1. Wonky haircut because you won't sit still.
2. Cute little toofers.
3. Drool on your shirt at ALL times.
4. "Guys" ...Whether it's Lego guys or Halo guys or Army men, you carry around your "guys" faithfully.

There are a lot of perks to being the baby. But, being number four means that on your second birthday we went to B-Dub's instead of having a party.

Some observations about the process and products:

  1. I used one piece of patterned paper, double sided, from Project Life (Clementine kit, I think)
  2. I used one photo...that I added numbers to and put a frame around in Picasa before printing and then I trimmed it so that a border of the white photo paper showed
  3. I used letter stickers, a border punch, and a couple of markers. That's about it.
  4. Kevin and I talked about how Ashton will never remember that we didn't go all out for his second birthday.  Well, now that he has this birthday scrapbook he will! LOL  More material for his future therapy.

LOAD512 - Day 13 - Mother's Day

The prompt for Lain Ehmann's Layout a Day (LOAD512) challenge for Day 13: Prompt: Sketchy Sunday

I had every intention of following the sketch today. Sketches are probably one of the easier prompts for me to follow. But then, when we were at a Mother's Day brunch this morning, my 16 year old daughter gave me this letter and her favorite picture of the two of us (that she had accidentally printed on photo paper, but that accident turned out in my favor!) Because, as soon as I saw it, and read what she had written, I knew it would be used on my scrapbook page for today, complete with any incorrect grammar or incorrect punctuation that she may have used. All I had to do was trim it down from 8.5x11, mat it, embellish it, and put it on some patterned paper, and VOILA! Page is done for the day.

Journaling Reads:

December 20th 1995 was the day you entered a whole new world, motherhood. For the past 16 years you have been a truly amazing mother to me and the boys. But the relationship between a mother and daughter is so much different and special. Our bond has grown stronger and stronger over the years. We laugh together, shop together, Zumba together (on occasion), share clothes and jewelry, but most of all you share your love with me every day. You teach me how to be a good friend to others, you give me advice, and most of all you teach me how to be patient with others. I love when people say we look alike because you are so beautiful inside and out and it is nice knowing I resemble such a beautiful women. Your laughter always puts a smile to my face, it is so similar to papas laugh and it’s like a piece of him is still with us. I am so happy and thankful for you brining me into this world. Thank you for all the things you have given me, a nice home, clothes, food, a great school district, a car, but most of all thank you for giving me such a beautiful and loving family. I would not trade you guys for the world. I know we have our fights and arguments but no matter what I will always love you. How can I not, were practically the same person ;) I am so proud of you, being the mother of 4 children cannot be easy, we get through each day, some are harder than others, but we always make it through. I hope your mother’s day is full of love joy and happiness. HAPPY MOTHERS DAY!

Love your first born Jordyn

Some observations about the process and products:

  1. I wish EVERY scrapbook page was this easy to put together!
  2. Stampin' Up patterned papers.
  3. Tag from my punched shapes "tags" mini drawer.
  4. Totally cried when I read this...AT Boulder Point.  Asked Jordyn to give things like this to me at home next time!! :)

LOAD512 - Day 12 - Happy Birthday Megan and Jordyn

The prompt for Lain Ehmann's Layout a Day (LOAD512) challenge for Day 12: Dumpster Diving, Find inspiration in the trash!

This prompt was EASY for me. I don't throw much away. When Lain suggested using ribbon scraps for a little collage, guess what I did? I went to my ribbon scraps bin (yes, it's even labeled "ribbon scraps" !) and I created a little ribbon collage!! Love it!

Journaling Reads:

You and your BFF, Megan, both have December birthdays. You also share the same circle of friends.  When you went to Megan's birthday party, you were delighted to see that she had included your name on the cake and shared the birthday spotlight. Such kind girls. 12/13/10

Some observations about the process and products:

  1. Loved the dumpster diving!  This is why I don't throw things away.
  2. Photo credit - I don't know....I wasn't even at the party, I downloaded all of these from Jordyn's Facebook page.  Thank you Facebook!
  3. The photo of the cake is serving as my TITLE on this page.  It's a little like cheating, but I think it works.

LOAD512 - Day 11 - 15

The prompt for Lain Ehmann's Layout a Day (LOAD512) challenge for Day 11: Prompt: Five Sense Friday, Touch

Didn't follow the prompt today.

Journaling Reads:

Jordyn Genella Hillary
You turned 15 today. You, Dad, Liam, Owen, Ashton, and I - along with your boyfriend, Jacob - went to Rochester to drive through the lights. We stopped at Buddy’s Pizza for dinner. You are turning into such a lovely young lady. You have a kind heart and an infectious smile. Even though you’re my daughter, I am starting to also consider you a treasured friend. 12/20/10

Some observations about the process and products:

  1. Ignore the tilt, the layout isn't tilted, the photograph of the layout is tilted.
  2. The only embellies on this page are patterned paper.  I could probably take it up a notch with some bling or brads or buttons.  But, really? Who needs all that other schtuff?
  3. I tried to remember what we gave Jor for her 15th birthday last year, but I couldn't remember.  Funny thing is, Jordyn couldn't remember, either.  Probably gift cards to go shopping and buy clothes.
  4. I love this girl.

LOAD512 - Day 10 - ON YOUR 7th BIRTHDAY

The prompt for Lain Ehmann's Layout a Day (LOAD512) challenge for Day 10: Use a cereal box for inspiration.

So, I went in the pantry, and pulled out this box:

And here is the layout that I created:

Journaling Reads:

  1. You had lunch with Principal Brasington in her office. No, not because your were in trouble, but because I won this privilege at the school auction.
  2. Your name and a happy birthday message were on the school marquis. (I also won this privilege at the school auction).
  3. Birthday dinner at Buffalo Wild Wings.
  4. Acting goofy.
  5. Why you chose to put your birthday cash in an Easter egg, I’m not sure. But it was your version of a wallet and you carried it in to the store..
  6. Spending your birthday money on Legos at Meijer. Decisions, decisions.
  7. It wasn’t hard to guess by this wrapping job (done by dad) what our gift to you was. Your own pool stick! You were THRILLED!

Some observations about the process and products:

  1. I used the same color scheme as the cereal box, white, green, and gold.
  2. The three buttons to the left of the journaled list and the button in the lower right corner of the journaled list echo the green circle/checkmarks and the USDA organic circle seal on the cereal box.
  3. This was quite fun.  There is literally inspiration EVERYWHERE!
  4. Another birthday layout complete!! WHOOP! WHOOP!  I have one more year to do for Owen's birthday book and it will be current.  Cue chorus of angels.

LOAD512 - Day 9 - Owen's Bowling Birthday

The prompt for Lain Ehmann's Layout a Day (LOAD512) challenge for Day 9: Use at least 6 photos

Journaling Reads:

We celebrated your 7th birthday on April 22, 2011 at Collier Lanes in Oxford, MI with friends and family. Everybody signed this keepsake bowling pin and had a blast. You said it was your best birthday EVER!

Some observations about the process and products:

  1. Helloooooo - Did anyone notice I followed the prompt. A-GAIN. tyvm
  2. Loooooooove Picasa!  Easy and free text on photos and collages!
  3. Loooooooove Stampin' Up patterned papers.  Some things are just constants.
  4. Why, yes, this is a double page. Toot! Toot!
  5. Owen tried to convince me to print the photo on the left in color, but I have final design decisions.

LOAD512 - Day 8 - Promise

The prompt for Lain Ehmann's Layout a Day (LOAD512) challenge for Day 8: Scrap someone else's story

I followed the prompt again! I followed the prompt again! (skipping, whistling, happy dance)

This is a page about my parents' wedding day, I emailed my mom to send me details about her wedding day (giving her prompts like: your dress, dad's tux, the minister, the church, the weather, etc.) and I pretty much copied and pasted verbatim everything she emailed back to me.

The journaling card behind the photo collage is double sided and reads:

The Couple – Bonnie June Belcher and Bennie Ray Shellnut were the bride and groom. I was 19 and a half. Bennie was 20 and would be 21 the following month.

The Date – Saturday, January 2, 1965

The Weather – Chilly and snowy

The Place - First Free Will Baptist Church of Hazel Park, Michigan where Bennie and I had attended for several years. He since birth; and I since I was 11.

The Dress and Accessories – I wore a white princess style dress with a lace, boat neck and long sleeves. (I borrowed the dress from Darlene Carpenter, a good friend who was two or three years older and had married just two years before.) I had a gold cross necklace, which I think Bennie gave to me previously, and my engagement ring. I also had a white knit shawl that I wore to and from the car. I carried a dozen red roses, which the florist advised against (he said brides should carry white flowers), in a triangle shape and tied with a white ribbon. I had faux pearl-laden tiara and a blue garter and white satin sparkly, 2-inch heels (the last time I ever wore such high heels. My bunions kept me from wearing heels.

The Tux – Bennie’s tuxedo was a white coat, white shirt, white bow tie, white cummerbund, and black pants with a red rose boutonniere. The tux rental place advised against white for a winter wedding. The groomsmen and my dad wore the same tux but had black bow ties and cummerbunds. Each wore a red boutonnière.

The Minister – We were married by our pastor William (Bill) Hill.

The Wedding Party – Dad’s best man was Jerry Barich; his other groomsman was Finis Barr, our youth pastor; and his brother Freddie, who was 13 or 14, was a junior groomsman. My maid of honor was Mary Carte; my other bride’s maid was Brenda Shellnut, Elmer’s daughter and Bennie’s niece; and my junior bride’s maid was my niece and sister Betty’s daughter, Denise Justice, who was 12 or 13. My sister Mary’s son, David Drake, about 6 or 7, was the ring bearer; and, our youth pastor’s daughter Vicki Barr, who was about 6, was the flower girl. My pastor’s wife, Julia Hill, made her dress to look like mine. The bride’s maids wore mint green sheath, short-sleeved, below-the knee dresses with a removable bell shaped skirt, which I designed and bought two patterns for Wilma Barr, our youth pastor’s wife, to make. They wore long mint green gloves and carried one red rose tied with a red ribbon. They had satin shoes like mine, but they were dyed mint green. I chose the colors for a winter-themed wedding and designed the dresses because they were modern and stylish and did not look like regular bride’s maid, evening gown dresses. Plus, I hope that they could be worn again by the bride’s maids; but, I don’t know if they were.

Did anyone give you advice? We attended pre-marriage counseling with our pastor, so he gave us advice about faith, love, sex, becoming parents, and sacrificing for one another.

What were your thoughts/feelings? I was happy to be marrying the man I loved, and who I knew loved me. And, I looked forward to our honeymoon in Niagara Falls and a life together.

What went through your mind walking down the aisle? I don’t remember exactly. But I had a special semi-circle stair case built, which was covered in white cloth, so we could walk up the stairs and stand facing each other during the ceremony. The attendants stood on each level of the steps. I had the kneeling alter covered in a white cushion. I was looking at the beauty of the altar and at Bennie waiting for me there. I was excited and happy. (I didn’t allow the photographer to take pictures of us walking toward to altar, And required him to take pictures from the balcony with a zoom lens because I did not like having photographers take pictures during wedding ceremonies.)

The Ceremony – We (probably I) revised the traditional vows and added our own verbiage, much of which we memorized. I was probably thinking about the words and hoping I wouldn’t forget any of them. As it turns out, I forgot a phrase during a long section. But, Bennie, the perfectionist, did not forget any of the vows. I still have the book with our rewritten vows in them. A good friend, Hansel MacDonald recorded the ceremony on tape (no camcorders in 1965) and gave it to us. I thought I gave it to Shawn and Scott in the early 1993, when we moved; but they don’t recall getting it.

The Transportation – The car was a brand new 1965 Maroon Impala with black interior. Bennie bought it in November or early December with his mother as cosigner. We traded it in in 68 for a new gold Oldsmobile...one of our bad moves. I really liked that car...but I always let Bennie make the decisions about cars.

The Honeymoon – We drove through Canada to Niagara Falls the next day, where it was a beautiful winter wonderland. We didn’t have boots, so our feet got wet and cold when we walked by the falls because the mist was always blowing, much like rain. We both ended up with colds. We were there three days and nights.

Some observations about the process and products:

  1. The flower in the upper right corner of the photo collage isn't there because of any design reasons, but rather to cover up a no parking sign in the photo that I didn't like.
  2. My mom scanned and emailed me these photos.  I knew I wanted the one of them waving, and then she picked out and sent over the other two.  Totally love.
  3. I'm beyond thrilled I have all of these details of my parents wedding recorded.

LOAD512 - Day 7 - Wine Buddies

The prompt for Lain Ehmann's Layout a Day (LOAD512) challenge for Day 7 - Half Hour Page

Took longer than a half hour, but I was doing other things whilst scrapping.  I took a departure from birthday pages for a minute and scrapped a VERY recent event.

Journaling Reads:

Wine Buddies
What a fabulous trip to Traverse City we had! On Cinco de Mayo, 2012, Kevin and I enjoyed the Sip & Savor wine tour of the Leelanau Peninsula with our best wine buddies, Amy and Joel Petoskey, and eleven other fun-loving couples. Our first stop was to Chateau de Leelanau where they served delicious pulled pork tacos paired with their Solem Farm Red. A wonderful day, indeed.

Some observations about the process and products:

  1. Twine would look good on this page. But, done is done.
  2. Photo Credit: Amy's iPhone with some sort of filter or app.  I'm not very iSmart.
  3. I really wish I was back on that wine tour, RIGHT. NOW.

LOAD512 - Day 6 - Jordyn's Fourteenth Birthday Party

The prompt for Lain Ehmann's Layout a Day (LOAD512) challenge for Day 6 - Sketchy Sunday

You may have noticed, but more than likely you didn't, that I didn't have a layout for Day 5.  That's because I was on a FABULOUS weekend trip to Traverse City-O for Cinco de Mayo.  But, ya know what, I'm not stressing out about the fact that I missed ONE day of LOAD this month.

On the bright side, I followed the prompt today!  I wish I could share the sketch with you, but I'm not sure how to do that.  Let's just say I didn't follow it exactly, but loosely.  It was nice to have the design inspiration.  And, hey, another birthday page!

Journaling Reads:

We celebrated your 14th birthday one month early to avoid the holiday rush in December.  You had 10 friends spend the night...Kristi, Alex, Chelsea, Louise, Megan, Alexis, Kayla, Shelby, Bailey, and Alicia.  You guys drank beer...ROOT beer of course...and watched scary movies.  And enjoyed red velvet cupcakes. 11/20/09

Some observations about the process and products:

  1. The title was taken from her invitation postcards that I had created.
  2. I think she might have been going through a little mom-leave-me-alone-I-need-some-breathing-room phase because, I didn't take many good photos of the party.  Kind of disappointed about that.
  3. I could NOT get the photos to print out well.  The coloring on them is HORRIBLE.  But, I finally conceded and technology won.  They are what they are.

LOAD512 - Day 4 - nine Years

The prompt for Lain Ehmann's Layout a Day (LOAD512) challenge for Day 4: Sounds

OK, so I didn't follow the prompt.....AGAIN. But I followed Day 3's prompt to use holiday colors on a non-holiday page. I used pastels reminiscent of an Easter egg on this page I created about my son and his baby quilt that I finally gave to him at NINE YEARS OLD! lol  Another one for his birthday book.  (Pardon the crooked, blurry, photo with a bad glare).

Journaling Reads:

It only took NINE YEARS for me to give you your baby quilt. The squares were made by gramma, me, Aunt Shawn, Aunt Dee, Aunt Mary, Aunt Marie, and other family members at your baby shower.  This year I FINALLY had the squares assembled into a quilt. Better late than never!

Some observations about the process and products:

  1. Done is better than perfect.
  2. Stampin' Up papers.  Love how the packs are double sided and coordinate.
  3. The flower was a last minute addition.
  4. I think this is missing something, maybe a tab or tag that let's Liam know that I gave this to him ON his ninth birthday as a birthday gift.  Hopefully he wraps his own babies in this quilt one day.  For now, it's hanging on Ashton's nursery wall.
  5. This page literally took me about 30 minutes to put together.  I'm getting better at this whole quick scrapping thing!

LOAD512 - Day 3 - 9

The prompt for Lain Ehmann's Layout a Day (LOAD512) challenge for Day 3: Use holiday colors on a non-holiday theme.

Umm, didn't follow the prompt....again.  But, hey, I got another one of my kids' birthday pages completed!

Journaling Reads:

We celebrated your 9th birthday by taking you and a few of your minions (your brother, Owen, your brother from another mother, Nathan Bourn, your football brother, Aiden Boeve, and your faux brother, Max Parsons) to the Star Theater at Great Lakes Crossing to watch "Despicable Me" in 3D. The movie was super cute, and everyone had a good time, despite the fact that I made you take a photo in the theater lobby.

Some observations about the process and the products used:

  1. Used my Cricut AGAIN.  Two days in a row? I'm going Cricut crazy!
  2. Cute minions, eh?
  3. I didn't take many pictures of Liam's "birthday party" but these were enough, and they tell the story.

LOAD512 - Day 2 - Turn 6, you did.

The prompt for Lain Ehmann's Layout a Day (LOAD512) challenge for Day 2 was No Photo.

As you can see, I couldn't be further OFF prompt. I have a list of things to do during this LOAD, and catching up on the kids' birthday albums is on the top of that list!! I even did a double today!! WOO HOO!

Tab behind the collage on the left, that says DEETS at the top provides the following details:
Owen, we celebrated your sixth birthday less than two weeks after Ashton was born. It was no small feat pulling off a party for 30 people while still recovering from childbirth, but the force was with your momma. With Jedi Aunt Shawn’s help, we pulled it off. You were going through a Star Wars phase, as you could probably guess from the pictures. Things that helped make your birthday party awesome, (in addition to the numerous friends and family that helped us celebrate), were (in no particular order):

  • Chocolate cupcakes with vanilla frosting topped with Darth Vader rings

  • Vanilla cupcakes with chocolate frosting topped with Storm Trooper rings

  • Red and green chocolate dipped pretzel rods….a.k.a. “Edible Light Sabers”Yoda Soda (Sprite and lime sherbet)

  • The Darth Vader piñata

  • Baby Ashton dressed up as Yoda

  • Liam dressed up as a Clone Wars clone

  • You dressed up as Darth Vader

  • Pin the light saber on the Jedi game

  • Legos, Legos, and more Legos

  • The perma-grin you sported throughout the whole party

Some observations about the process and the products used:

  1. I haven't used my Cricut in FOR-EVER! Used it for the title and it wasn't AS time consuming as I always make it out to be in my head.

  2. We really did pull off a pretty kick butt party for being two weeks post-partum!

  3. Not a whole lot of frills and thrills going on here, but, hey....IT'S DONE!! And I'm one page closer to having Owen's birthday album current! BOO-YAH!

LOAD512 - Day 1 - Fabulous

Am I crazy? Well, I think we already established that in February. And, here we are again with another Lay out a day challenge. Considering I haven't scrapped at all since Feb. 29, I'd say this is just what the doctor ordered. Because, guess what? When I don't scrap??? I am CRA-A-A-NKY! I need this creative outlet.

The theme for LOAD512 is Out of the Box. I'm excited to see what prompts Lain has in store for us. The prompt for Lain Ehmann's Layout a Day (LOAD512) challenge for Day 1 was - Self Portrait.
Considering HALF of the 29 layouts that I created in February were about me, this prompt isn't really pushing me outside of my comfort zone. So, I didn't truly take this prompt to heart. I did do a page about me, but more so about my girlfriends from high school. I already had this picture printed and decided to take the easy route, rather than really dig into the recesses of my photo stash and introspection for a true self portrait.

I hope tomorrow's outside the box prompt has something to do with birthdays, because I have at least 10 birthday layouts to catch up on!

Journaling Reads: These girls are fabulous! From their shoes, to their hair, to their hearts, to the belly-laughs we share. Enduring friendships and love.
Some observations about the process and the products used:

  1. Stampin' Up patterned paper.

  2. Fabulous is a Heidi Swapp silhouette.

  3. I need a new white pen.

  4. This is what happens when you accidentally print a picture for the wrong size frame...use it on a scrapbook page!

  5. Since this photo was taken when Ashton was barely 3 months old, I should have journaled a story about how much I miss and how in love I am with those FABULOUS nursing boobs.
